Okay, so picture this: I’m at my local bookstore, right? The place that smells faintly of old paper and desperate dreams. I’m browsing the manga section, looking for something new to devour (you know how it is!). I see this cover – dark, intriguing, and just… different. It’s Blackbird Scan VF Tome 4. I’d vaguely heard whispers about the series, something about demons and forbidden love, but hadn’t really given it a second thought. Until that moment.
Let’s be real, sometimes judging a book by its cover IS a good idea. And this cover screamed "Read me!" So, I bought it. No regrets. Absolutely none. Which brings us to the point of this article: diving headfirst into the fourth volume of Blackbird Scan VF, and what makes it so darn captivating.
Picking Up the Threads (or Yōkai Whispers)
If you're completely new to Blackbird, welcome to the party! It's basically about Misao, a seemingly ordinary high school girl (yeah, right!) who possesses rare blood that makes her incredibly desirable to the Yōkai world. Cue Kyo, a powerful Yōkai who needs her blood to survive and, of course, protect her from all the other creepy crawlies who want a piece of her. Romantic, right? (Ish.)
Must Read
Volume 4 is where things really start to heat up. Not just the romantic tension (oh boy, the tension!), but also the plot itself. We’re not just talking about monster-of-the-week scenarios anymore. The overarching narrative is thickening, secrets are being revealed, and loyalties are being tested.
Remember that slightly awkward scene in volume 3 where [SPOILER - I won't actually spoil it!]? Well, it has major repercussions here. Things that were hinted at before are now front and center, forcing Misao and Kyo to confront some pretty heavy truths about themselves and their relationship. And let me tell you, it's not always pretty. Cue dramatic music.

Kyo's Angst (and Our Enjoyment of It)
One of the things I appreciate most about Blackbird is the character development, especially Kyo's. He starts off as this super-powerful, almost aloof Yōkai, but as the series progresses (and especially in this volume), we see his vulnerabilities, his fears, and his genuine affection for Misao.
He's not just a pretty face (though, let's be honest, he is!).

Volume 4 really delves into his past and the responsibilities he carries. It's a lot for one Yōkai to handle! And it makes him more relatable, even though he's, you know, a mythical creature. Who hasn't felt overwhelmed by responsibility? Okay, maybe not Yōkai responsibility, but still… you get the idea.
Misao's Growth (She’s Not Just a Damsel)
Speaking of character development, Misao shines in this volume too. She’s not just a damsel in distress waiting to be rescued (though she does get rescued a few times, let's be honest!). She’s starting to take control of her destiny, to understand her own power, and to make her own choices.
It's a slow burn, but it's satisfying to watch. She's figuring out what she wants, not just what everyone else expects from her. You go, girl!

Scan VF? What's the Deal?
Now, about that "Scan VF" part. For those not in the know, "Scan VF" basically means "Scan Version Française" (French Scan). So, this particular edition is translated into French. If you're comfortable reading in French, then you're golden. If not, you'll want to look for an English translation.
Just a heads-up, in case you accidentally ordered a French textbook! (Don't laugh, it happens!)

Final Thoughts (and Recommendations)
Overall, Blackbird Scan VF Tome 4 is a solid addition to the series. It builds upon the foundation laid in the previous volumes, raises the stakes, and deepens the relationships between the characters. If you're a fan of supernatural romance with a touch of darkness and intrigue, then this is definitely a series you should check out.
But, a word of caution: don't start with volume 4! You'll be completely lost. Go back to volume 1 and work your way up. Trust me, it's worth it. And prepare to get hooked!
So, what are you waiting for? Go read it! Then come back and tell me what you think. I'm dying to discuss it!
