Les Bases, Bébé! (The Basics, Baby!)

First things first: download SketchUp 2016. You might even be able to find a free version of it – a godsend for budget-conscious virtual architects like us! Once you've got it installed, open it up and prepare to be greeted by a blank canvas. Don't panic! It's just waiting for your creative genius (or, you know, a slightly wonky rectangle) to appear.

The Rectangle Tool is your best friend for starting your house. Click and drag to create the base of your walls. Think about the dimensions you want your house to be. Don't get carried away and create a mega-mansion, unless you're feeling ambitious (or have a secret lottery win to virtually spend).

Next up: the Push/Pull Tool. This is what turns your flat rectangle into actual walls. Click on the face of the rectangle and drag upwards to give it height. Voilà! Walls! Feeling powerful yet? You should be.

Pro Tip: Don't make your walls paper-thin. Give them some thickness! You can always adjust it later.

Okay, so you've got a box. A glorified virtual box. Time to add some personality – and, more importantly, doors and windows! Use the Rectangle Tool again to draw where you want your openings to be on the walls.

Now for the tricky part: the roof. There are a million ways to do this, depending on the style you want. A simple flat roof is easiest, just use the Rectangle Tool again to create a rectangle on top of your walls and then Push/Pull it upwards slightly for some overhang.

For a more complex pitched roof, you'll need to experiment with the Line Tool and the Move Tool. Don't be afraid to watch some YouTube tutorials – seriously, they're lifesavers! I spent a solid hour just trying to get my roof to look even remotely symmetrical. (Turns out, symmetry is harder than it looks.)

Détails, Détails (Details, Details)

This is where the real fun begins! Adding doors, windows, textures, furniture – basically, everything that makes a house a home. SketchUp has a vast 3D Warehouse where you can download pre-made models of just about anything you can imagine. Want a fancy chandelier? Done! A retro fridge? No problem! A life-sized T-Rex statue for your living room? Go for it! (I'm not judging...much.)

Experiment with different materials and colors. Play around with the textures. Make your house look exactly how you want it to. It's your virtual world, after all!
